The Ethical Boundary: How Do We Avoid Becoming Like Our Opponents? | Iran 2.0, S2E4

Mini-Article

One standard, including for ourselves

During political conflict, it is tempting to excuse a wrong by saying that the other side is worse. Ethical credibility does not come from comparing mistakes. It depends on standards that also hold when friends and allies are involved. If an action violates human dignity, the identity of the person responsible should not change our judgment.

This standard has practical meaning: check claims before sharing them, ask allies to account for mistakes, insist on due process, and protect civilians and vulnerable people. These boundaries are hardest to keep in moments of anger, which is why they need to be discussed before a crisis.

A useful test is simple: how would I respond if a political opponent did the same thing? An honest answer is a step toward a future whose methods match its aims.
